Mercedes S-Class Returns with Tech-Heavy Refresh and V8 Surprise

The Mercedes S-Class has quietly reasserted its dominance in the luxury sedan segment with a substantial refresh for 2026. While the W223 generation has largely faded into the background amid the rise of EQ-badged EVs and Maybach iterations.

his update brings nearly 50 percent of the car’s 2,700 components refreshed or refined, blending evolutionary design with cutting-edge technology.

Exterior tweaks are subtle but impactful: the three-pointed star on the bonnet can now illuminate, the grille grows 20 percent wider, and the wheels and lighting gain a sharper, more upscale presence. Buyers craving individuality can tap into Mercedes Manufaktur for over 150 paint shades and 400 interior options.

The car’s Digital Light system now boasts a Dynamic Ultra Range high beam capable of reaching 600 meters, ensuring night-time visibility that could clear even the M40 with ease.

Under the hood, Mercedes offers a familiar yet modernized powertrain lineup: mild-hybrid petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options, alongside a headline-grabbing addition—a flat-plane-crank 4.0-litre M177 V8. With turbo tweaks, a redesigned intake cam, overhauled injection, and mild hybridization, this Evo-spec V8 promises quicker responses and refined delivery, setting the stage for future AMG models. The 3.0-litre M256 straight-six and OM656 diesel also receive Evo updates to comply with Euro 7 standards.

Inside, the S-Class leans into its reputation for technological prowess. A state-of-the-art MB.OS supercomputer powers the Superscreen and MBUX, now integrated with ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini for smarter voice control and productivity on the move.

Air suspension, four-wheel steering, and the innovative E-Active Body Control allow the car to anticipate road conditions, counteract lift, pitch, and roll, and even adjust proactively in the event of a collision. Cabin comfort is equally impressive, with Digital Vent Control, Energizing Air Control, heated seatbelts, six massage programs, and a 4D Burmester audio system that turns sound into a tactile experience.

Rear passengers remain the true beneficiaries, with illuminated cupholders, a full-length business console, and an optional chauffeur package that folds the front seat flat. Mercedes Chairman Ola Källenius underscored the significance: “The S-Class embodies 140 years of innovation and excellence. Brilliant engineering, effortless comfort, quiet confidence, timeless design—that’s what the S-Class delivers.”

UK customers can expect full specifications and availability announcements in the coming months, with first deliveries slated for later this year. The refreshed S-Class keeps the luxury sedan at the forefront of automotive innovation while promising a driving and riding experience that remains second to none.
