Mercedes-AMG Confirms C53 with 3.0-Litre Straight-Six for Saloon and Estate

Mercedes-AMG is set to revive the straight-six in the C-Class with the new C53, borrowing the 3.0-litre M256 mild-hybrid engine from the CLE coupe.

CEO Michael Schiebe told TheCarsDaily that the coupe’s engine had been a hit with customers, promising the saloon and estate variants will deliver an “even more emotional” driving experience.

The C53 will slot alongside the existing C43 and C63 models, offering a niche alternative as smaller turbo engines like the 2.0-litre M139 face Euro 7 compliance limits.

Output is expected to mirror the CLE’s 449hp, paired with a nine-speed automatic and 4Matic all-wheel drive.

While it won’t match the M3’s 530hp, AMG is aiming for a balanced mix of performance, affordability, and visual flair, with exterior design remaining a key selling point.

Schiebe emphasized AMG’s commitment to petrol engines, noting that the M256 will appear in mild-hybrid and plug-in forms across the portfolio alongside the Euro 7-compliant flat-plane 4.0-litre V8.

“We want to continue our combustion engine history and success,” he said, signaling more “product fireworks” including Mythos special editions, SUVs, and even Black Series models.

AMG’s electric strategy runs parallel, with the EA platform spawning coupe variants of EV SUVs and the upcoming CLA AMG promising the same emotional engagement as combustion models.

Affalterbach enthusiasts have plenty to anticipate: straight-six swagger in the C-Class, continued V8 thrillers, and EVs designed to feel genuinely fast. For those eyeing a CLE 53 discount, the wait may be worth it.
