Jaguar Type 01 Arrives With 1,015bhp and 450-Mile Range

Jaguar has revealed the Type 01, a 1,015bhp electric grand tourer that effectively draws a line under the company we once knew. With an estimated £120,000 starting price and up to 450 miles of claimed range, this is the car tasked with launching Jaguar into its radically different electric era.

Previously developed under the Project Pantera and X900 names, the Jaguar Type 01 has actually been taking shape for years. Its dramatic exterior design was largely settled in 2021, long before the Type 00 concept publicly previewed Jaguar’s new direction.

Rather than evolving the familiar XE, XF and F-Pace formula, Jaguar has designed the Type 01 as a low-volume luxury flagship intended to push the marque considerably further upmarket.

The numbers are equally ambitious. A 118kWh battery supplies three electric motors, with one driving the front axle and separate motors powering each rear wheel. Combined output stands at 1,015bhp and 1,006lb ft, while active torque vectoring and 6.5 degrees of rear-wheel steering aim to disguise the car’s considerable size and estimated 2,700kg weight.

Jaguar quotes 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and a 150mph top speed. The structure achieves a claimed torsional rigidity of 57,000Nm per degree, while standard wheels measure a substantial 23 inches.

Range is quoted at up to 450 miles, although Jaguar acknowledges sustained motorway driving without regenerative braking could bring that closer to 320 miles. The 118kWh pack works with an 850-volt electrical architecture, with a theoretical recharge time of around 22 minutes.

Aerodynamics have received equally serious attention: Jaguar carried out 7,000 wind-tunnel tests, while the Type 01 can achieve a 0.23Cd drag coefficient on 21-inch wheels. A three-position rear spoiler can also generate 75kg of downforce at speed.

Jaguar has subjected more than 150 prototypes to extensive testing, ranging from temperatures of -30°C to more than 40°C. Inside, the Type 01 launches as a four-seater with a large central spine dividing the cabin, a seven-inch secondary interface and a dominant 24-inch display. There is no conventional rear window.

Jaguar isn’t trying to make the Type 01 universally appealing. Instead, it is betting that distinctive design, enormous performance and exclusivity can reposition the British marque as a genuinely desirable electric luxury manufacturer. At around £120,000 before options, it is an ambitious gamble — and arguably Jaguar’s most important new car in decades.
