Formula E is about to get considerably louder in appearance, even if the cars remain almost silent.
Liberty Walk has teamed up with Andretti for this weekend’s Tokyo E-Prix, giving Jake Dennis and Felipe Drugovich’s Porsche 99X Electric GEN3 Evos a chrome-and-blue livery inspired by the Nissan R34 GT-R.
Liberty Walk founder Wataru Kato is better known for transforming exotic and performance cars with extreme bodywork, having turned his attention to everything from Ferrari F40s and Lamborghini Miuras to Nissan Skylines.
Formula E’s regulations, unsurprisingly, leave little room for the tuner’s trademark bolt-on arches and aggressive stance, so the collaboration has instead been delivered through the cars’ liveries.
The design takes clear inspiration from the R34 GT-R, with a deliberate Fast and Furious flavour. Its chrome finish is intended to catch the floodlights at Tokyo Big Sight, where Formula E will stage its first Japanese night race.
For British fans, there is an obvious local connection too: reigning Formula E champion Jake Dennis will carry the Liberty Walk design on one of Andretti’s cars, alongside newcomer Felipe Drugovich.
The timing is particularly interesting as Formula E prepares to introduce its GEN4 car for the 2026/27 season. The new machine will produce 450kW, equivalent to around 603bhp, in race trim – a 50 per cent increase over the current GEN3 Evo.
Attack Mode will raise output to 600kW, or roughly 804bhp, giving the GEN4 car 71 per cent more power than its predecessor.
That performance was already demonstrated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where Dan Ticktum took second in the Timed Shootout with a 42.46-second run, missing victory by less than half a second.
Before GEN4 arrives, though, the current championship has plenty left to settle. Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein leads on 141 points, with Jaguar’s Mitch Evans only nine behind.
Oliver Rowland, António Félix da Costa, Jake Dennis and Edoardo Mortara complete a top six separated by just 38 points, while 58 points are available across Tokyo’s two races.
With the championship this tight, the Liberty Walk cars won’t be the only things attracting attention under the lights.
