Rivian has given its electric R1 a supernatural makeover for Halloween 2026, teaming up with Sony Pictures to create the Ecto-R1, a modern tribute to one of cinema’s most recognisable vehicles.
The Ghostbusters-inspired EV also marks the arrival of a limited-time software update packed with themed displays, sounds and interactive features.
The Ecto-R1 takes inspiration from the original Ecto-1, the converted Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance made famous by the 1984 Ghostbusters film.
Rivian has recreated the spirit of the original without abandoning its modern electric design, fitting distinctive 22-inch white-and-silver Aero wheels and a roof rack loaded with equipment inspired by the fictional paranormal investigators.

The result blends familiar Ghostbusters styling with the proportions and technology of Rivian’s flagship electric vehicle.
Unlike the ageing Cadillac from the original film, however, this version has no combustion engine or exhaust system to worry about.
Rivian has also confirmed that the special vehicle will appear at its New York City location in the Meatpacking District, with further appearances planned in Laguna Beach, Austin, San Francisco and Miami.
The bigger announcement concerns Rivian owners, who will receive access to a new Ghostbusters-themed Halloween experience through an over-the-air software update beginning on 9 October.

The seasonal software transforms the vehicle’s digital displays with customised graphics, film-inspired sound effects and atmospheric interior lighting.
Drivers can also try Mallow Mash, an interactive touchscreen game that challenges players to eliminate as many Mini-Puft characters as possible before the timer expires. Rivian has extended the entertainment beyond the cabin, too.
Its Trick or Treat mode combines the unmistakable Ghostbusters theme tune with synchronised exterior lighting and sound effects, while Motion mode activates additional light and audio sequences when someone approaches the vehicle.
For UK enthusiasts, the Ecto-R1 offers another example of how electric vehicle manufacturers are using software to introduce features long after a car leaves the showroom.

Although the Halloween experience is aimed at Rivian vehicles in the United States, the approach highlights the growing role of digital customisation in modern motoring.
The collaboration also gives Rivian an opportunity to connect its electric SUV technology with a film franchise recognised across generations.
Owners will have until 2 November to enjoy the seasonal features before the Ghostbusters experience disappears from their vehicles.
