McLaren McL 820 confirmed for 2027 with 820PS

McLaren has confirmed its next series-production supercar will be called the McL 820, with an arrival planned for 2027. The number refers to its announced 820PS output, equivalent to approximately 809bhp.

Expected to replace the 750S, the newcomer brings a different naming format to McLaren’s core supercar range. However, the announcement stops short of revealing the car itself or explaining its powertrain.

The name first appeared on a camouflage-covered kiwi sculpture in London’s Covent Garden. McLaren then confirmed the designation in an announcement issued on 30 October.

The bird connects the campaign with founder Bruce McLaren, who used the kiwi as an emblem. Meanwhile, the McL prefix draws on the company’s motorsport heritage, paired with a number indicating power.

For buyers, the more significant detail is what remains undisclosed. McLaren’s announcement provides no engine specification, weight, acceleration figures or price. It also leaves unanswered how much of that 820PS might come from electrical assistance.

A hybrid V8 is expected, with specialist reporting pointing towards McLaren’s next generation of powertrains. That remains an expectation rather than a technical specification confirmed in this announcement.

That distinction matters: a power figure alone cannot explain how the new car will drive. Weight, power delivery and any hybrid system’s contribution will help determine its character.

For now, McLaren has confirmed the name, output and 2027 arrival window. Further details are due next year.
