Autoforma Norrsken Reimagines Volvo P1800 ES

Meet the Autoforma Norrsken, a reworked Volvo P1800 ES that blends Scandinavian restraint with modern engineering — and it’s now open for commissions.

Created by Autoforma, an offshoot of Niels van Roij Design, the Norrsken (Swedish for Northern Lights) takes the elegant P1800 ES shooting brake and subtly evolves it.

Wider tracks sit beneath carbon fibre arch extensions, while revised lighting, larger wheels and discreet spoilers sharpen the stance.

It’s lower and broader than a standard 1970s Volvo, yet still unmistakably P1800 — chrome details intact.

Buyers can choose from themed builds. ‘Heritage Heaven’ focuses on period-correct colours and materials, refining the classic rather than reinventing it.

‘Modern Marvel’ introduces more power and sharper handling with contemporary design touches. At the top sits ‘Forward Fashionista’, the launch specification and most comprehensive transformation.

That version adopts Volvo’s T5 five-cylinder engine, paired with quicker steering, updated transmission and drivetrain components, plus uprated suspension and brakes.

Power figures remain unconfirmed, with Autoforma prioritising balance and usability over headline outputs.

Inside, the cabin is entirely retrimmed to order. Wood, aluminium, chrome and Alcantara can all feature, while the ES’s distinctive glassy boot gains polished rails, leather straps and even bespoke luggage.

Autoforma describes the result as a collector-grade modern classic — a bold claim, though Niels van Roij’s previous commissions, including a Wraith Shooting Brake now owned by Dario Franchitti, suggest the ambition is justified.
